Syracuse City Council

The Syracuse City Council is composed of five members and the Mayor. All members are elected by the residents of the City during a municipal election held every two years. Each seat consists of a four year term. Council Member terms are staggered; two Members and the Mayor are elected at one time, and two years later the other three Members are elected.

Council Members
Douglas Peterson

Term of Office: Jan. 2012 - Jan. 2016

Doug Peterson grew up in Syracuse, attending Syracuse Elementary, Cook Elementary, Syracuse Jr. High, Clearfield High, and Weber State University. After serving an LDS mission in Oklahoma City, he married Stephanie Earl, and they built their home in Syracuse. They have two sons and one daughter.

Councilman Peterson is also Coach Peterson, having spent the last 16 years as a teacher and a coach in the Davis School District. He currently teaches P.E. at Legacy Jr. High, where he also has responsibilities coaching basketball and track, as well as being the athletic director and department head. He loves this combination of sports and working with young people, and finds it very enjoyable and rewarding.

Doug has been involved in three elections, losing only by 11 votes in 2005, winning a close race in 2007, and being re-elected by only one vote in 2011. He finds the grass-roots nature of municipal government to be fascinating, and feels that this is where he can have the most impact on every day life, and where he can give back to his community.

Doug received a master's degree in recreation, and believes that providing parks and recreational opportunities for residents of Syracuse is crucial, along with providing high quality public safety and other services. He also feels that he must be a responsible steward of citizen's tax dollars.

Doug loves to build and fix things, and is always looking for the next project either at his own home, or to help friends and family members in their homes. He also spends a lot of spare time playing, singing, writing, listening to, and otherwise enjoying music.
